A FEW WORDS FROM YOUR PRESIDENT...

Greetings to all you who have made the time in your busy lives to attend our 9th G4 Convention! It’smy sincerest hopes that this will be the, highlight of your numismatic year. Many have been working for months to make this the awesome event to which we’ve become accustomed every year. Space does not allow me to recognize all the individuals involved so I won’t tty.

This program is an experiment, and if well received, we’ll consider continuing it in the future. If they end up on the bourse floor, then... The idea for this program came very shortly before the convention and we could not contact all the C4 dealers with tables, but there are several pages of dealer information for you to keep and' refer to throughout the year. These guys take on the expense and efforts to purchase tables and support our convention. Please give them a call when you’re looking to obtain that new addition to your collections. Also included are advertisements from the four numismatic firms that support our quarterly newsletter by purchasing full-page advertisements in each issue.

We have exhibits, which I look forward to each year. Buell Ish is our Exhibits Chairman. The educational events this convention will be memorable. Mike Packard is our Educational Chairman and you can see a listing of events elsewhere in this program. Neil Rothschild will be heading a seminar on digital photography. Tom Rinaldo and M&G have a i stellar auction with the core consignment being the Griffee St Patrick’s Reference Collection. Dennis Wierzba is our Convention Chairman and made all the arrangements with Ed Aleo and the Hotel so we have tables, food and rooms in which we hold our events.

I encourage any that don’t know me to please introduce yourself sometime during the convention. I hope to be at the C4 Table often and should be easily found elsewhere too. Have fun and give us your input about the convention so we know where needs are being met and where we need to improve.

C4’s Focus and Purpose

The Colonial Coin Collectors Club (Q4) was founded in 1993 to provide a forum for collectors of numismatic material related to the Early American era. This involves coins, tokens, currency, and medals. The exact time frame encompassed by colonial numismatics is open to debate, but is generally accepted to include the complete pre-federal period as well as some issues of the 1790’s. The early George Washington coins, tokens and > medals are considered colonial items by most, and some of these date to the first half of the nineteenth century.

The club provides a forum for people interested in this period. The aims of the club are:

1- To increase the public’s knowledge about colonial numismatics through meetings, conventions and its newsletter.

2- To promote the study of colonial numismatics and to help disseminate this information.

3- To cultivate fraternal collector relations.

For these purposes, the club will hold several meetings during the year in conjunction with major numismatic shows. The club has also established a colonial reference library and a colonial coin photo file. In addition, the C4 Newsletter is published quarterly.

“Not in Betts #1”

The Treaty of Breda medals

This group of medals was struck to commemorate the Peace and Treaty of Breda concluded in 1667. Among the provisions included was the formal ceding of Dutch territory in North America to England, which became New York and New Jersey. Certainly an event of greater significance to most of us than the various Dutch, Spanish, French, and British battles in the Caribbean and South America at roughly die same time. And none of these medals were listed in the 1894 Betts reference (Although in fairness, Wyllys Betts died before this book was published, which was subsequendy done by his cousin Benjamin along with Lyman Low, so he didn't have an opportunity to revise or add to the material).

"Everything but...:A collection about Higley coppers"

The copper tokens made by Samuel Higley and at least one associate between 1737 and 1739 in Simsbury Connecticut have been collected for almost 2 centuries. The legends and designs of these coppers have also been borrowed by other token and medal makers. This exhibit includes exact (and not-so-exact) copies made for collectors as well as tokens and medals inspired by Higley's work. They range from electrotypes and struck copies intended to closely replicate the originals to tokens from the Civil War to the modern era using Higley's legend "Value me as you please". There are also advertising pieces using Higley's well- known deer design and a variety of pieces made as souvenirs for tourists visiting the Newgate Prison copper mines barely a mile from the site of Higley's mine, including a special version made for 1927 visitors during the ANA convention being held in nearby Hartford, Connecticut.

A Selection of Continental Currency.

Continental Currency was the first circulating money made in the 13 colonies for the entire nascent nation, That tradition continued after independence was declared. From 1775 through 1779, there were 11 regular issues plus a variety of special issues as the war came to a close and inflation had rendered most Continental notes virtually worthless. This display includes notes from 1775 to 1779 and includes both genuine and counterfeit notes to illustrate various features, such as nature prints using technology developed by Ben Franklin, and paper containing mica flecks to discourage counterfeiting.
